MODESTY IN DRESS AND OTHER BEHAVIOURS, read to the last line...
MODESTY, TZNIUS, THE PERFECT WAY
Is quite the perfect way to be,
When standing or seated in a chair,
One is ever constantly aware,
Length of skirt or dress to be,
At least four (4) inches below the knee,
According to your Rabbi’s psak (ruling), (The Rabbi must be an authentic Orthodox Jewish Rabbi)
Longer too is also smart.
Stripes aren’t worn, nor color bright,
Gaudy patterns keep out of sight,
From elbow to wrist sleeve length is correct,
Not tight nor loose is just perfect,
Necklines high to neck should be,
Perfectly circled and not saggy,
To hips and bodice we add slack four (4) inches (in total),
Not to make the clothing pinch.
Sleeves may be rolled up to just below the elbows,
When cleaning or doing any other jobs,
Shoes should be respectable and modest,
Not in glaring color nor style that is dishonest,
Of bags and accessories too, it is important,
To be completely modest, not making a fashion statement of it.
Open crochet or lace,
We don’t wear, it’s not our taste,
As clothing is a necessity,
For protection, warmth and privacy,
So see-through decoration,
Does not suit our situation,
So we do not at all see,
Any advantage thus to be.
Knitted or jersey clothes, don’t let them squeeze,
The body contours it would displease,
Figure-hugging is not modest,
Roomier sized clothes are better for us,
Body shape is by HaShem (G-D) granted,
Not to flaunt and not to hint at,
Any closely fitting clothing,
We avoid, as it is flaunting.
Shiny fabric, as its glitz,
Is avoided, ostentatious it is,
Sequins and such-like tease the eye,
All such traffic stoppers, we do not buy,
Authentic in our modesty,
We all strive dressed to be,
Quiet in our own modest statement,
No regrets in our self-effacement.
Trinket, bauble and bling aren’t worn,
As outside we don’t adorn (with jewellery).
These at home we can still wear,
As at these no one will stare.
Not taking any chances,
Under any circumstances,
But safely regal with these three,
We can at home, sure to be.
Choose looser clothing, not close fit,
Making sure to have no slits,
All hems much wider than the waist,
Bodice and hips, not tight but chaste,
Opaque clothes are a must,
Transparent clothes are not for us,
Stockings, darker or even skin tone,
Shade depending on local Jewish custom.
Nude colored fabric we do not wear,
Optical illusion that is unfair,
We must carefully divert the mind,
From errant thoughts, and be refined,
Having our own intrinsic worth,
Transcending what is found on earth,
So walking or acting in a haughty manner,
Is contrary to us, and so is “glamor”.
Make-up subtle, not full blast,
To make the subtle effect last,
Perfume, none or minimal,
Not overpowering, that’s pivotal,
Nails cut nice and short and clean,
Subtle varnish may be seen,
Being our authentic selves,
Making sure our plan prevails.
Trousers, leggings, culottes are all out,
We do not let them in our heart,
This garment that we never wore,
Even when “made for ladies” we don’t explore,
We do not buy them, much less wear,
As they too the spirit snare,
As Torah says, so we are taught,
We all agree, as men we’re not.
“Pants” outline the body contour,
Thus modesty is sadly conquered,
Clothes for men we never wear,
Gender confusion we cannot bear,
Separated after Creation,
Man and woman require segregation,
When under chuppah we unite,
It is from the Creator’s might.
Hats or short (synthetic) wigs for married ladies,
Modest color, cover gladly,
Or tichel, a kerchief on the head,
Hue subdued, that is well bred,
Sure to make all the strands hidden,
For we know what is forbidden,
Ladies role is to make safe,
Our traditions of perfect faith.
At work we try always to be polite,
Not familiar, civil is just right,
Speaking nicely and clearly,
Singing only privately.
Long hair plaited or a short style,(both for single women)
Off the face, best by a mile,
Attention to all modest detail,
Simply neat in every way.
Only girls sing along,
Not for males, but private room,
No performing as in broadway,
Modest, we will always stay,
Treating all with dignity,
Everyone deserves sympathy,
Our sisters too we do help,
Love your friend as yourself, (from the Holy Torah)
Happy for our friends’ success,
Peace that leads to zero stress,
When a matter is misconceived,
Benefit of doubt be sure to give, (dan l'kaf z'chut, judging people favorably)
Be example of perfection,
Modesty means no distraction,
Time to think, do good, and pray,
Making time for these each day.
Privacy in our own thoughts,
No need to cry out all the words,
We don’t go out, on the world’s stage,
So mobile, computer, we don’t engage,
Except for work (parnassah) and for learning,
As other matters are disturbing,
Where people are in public space,
No privacy for every face!
Internet is seen by all eyes,
B’li ayin hara (Hebrew: without the evil eye), that isn’t wise,
This is not our given role,
Mitzvot (the commandments) are our real true goal,
Personal privacy (yichud) we don’t breach,
About this Torah does teach,
Care not breaking Torah laws,
We keep away from any flaws.
Reflect and see that what we read,
In Torah is good, we must concede,
Learning from our Imahot (Heb: Our Mothers: Sarah, Rivka, Rochel and Leah),
What we are and what we’re not,
Turning away from things that may blemish,
Time-honored codes that we all cherish,
Leave the “fads”, they’re not our goal,
It’s modesty that is in our soul.
Dass Yehudis is Jewish ladies,(Daas: Heb: knowledge, Yehudis: Heb: Jewish woman)
Dressing modestly through the ages,
From before Sinai (when the Torah was given by G-D to the Jewish people) and forward,
Modesty is its own reward,
Every fad, fashion and trend,
Are avoided, we won’t pretend,
We strive modestly, we have proclaimed,
So Torah laws will be maintained.
Security that Israel seeks,
Depends on Torah’s path unique,
Different in a special way,
So “fashion” we do not display,
Modesty is definitely,
Quite the perfect way to be,
Quiet and civil in our manner,
We continue this endeavor.
May all Jewish women and girls be blessed by the Master of the Universe with the insight to know, understand and practice the positive
mida (Hebrew: character trait) of tznius or modesty, to be confident in their Jewishness with the understanding that“Col cavuda bas melech p’nima” (Tehillim 45:14)(Psalms):“All the glory of the King’s daughter is within” and that this should be reflected by being modest both internally and externally without any self-aggrandisement and without any craving whatsoever for following fashion, in order to maintain the authentic beauty with which the neshoma (Hebrew: soul) is endowed, doing the Will of the Creator, Amen. May it be so.
